Love the smell of dead bugs in the morning

Software bugs can be a bit of a nuisance. They can freeze laptops, slow down websites and prevent systems from intercepting a Scud missile heading your way. That last pesky issue was one the US military had to deal with during the Gulf War back in 1991.

Testing bugs just got dicey.

But now the men in green berets have come up with a solution to limit further technology-related disasters on the battlefield and have begun recruiting software testers.

Now, while the thought of sending an army of Halo-trained geeky testers into battle sounds implausibly mouth-watering – all that time spent online gunning down ‘noobs’? Imagine the carnage! – what the military bods have in mind is to transform dull bug-hunting tasks into fun videogames that will help to test military software. SpaceX jammed

The launch of a SpaceX commercial cargo ship originally planned for February 7 has been pushed back by a couple of months due to necessary additional testing.

Dragon Cargo Carrier

The space ship, awesomely christened ‘Dragon Cargo Carrier’, is part of a program involving a series of test flights planned by SpaceX under a separate contract valued at up to $396 million. The first flight successfully took place in December 2010, when the last Dragon capsule was transported into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and guided to a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean (must’ve been one hell of a belly flop). Tablet to extinguish laptop?

According to a test carried out by Cleveland.com tablet platforms may well replace laptops in every way possible.

The overall usage of tablets is growing at an astonishing rate, with the Pew Internet and American Life Project reporting that the number of people in the US using such devices almost doubled to 19% in January, compared to 10% in December (!!). Read more…

Considering tablets can do almost everything laptops can, they’re easily portable and more fun to use, expect the surge to go on for some time.
